The Emperor of All Maladies: A Biography of Cancer

by Siddhartha Mukherjee

Join us in January as we start our discussion groups for this year’s One City of Hope, One Story book “The Emperor of All Maladies,” Mukherjee’s Pulitzer Prize winning biography of cancer.  Because of the length and the amount of material covered by the book we will be dividing the book into three parts for discussion purposes.  In January we will discuss the Author’s Note, Prologue, Parts One and Two.  February’s discussions will be on Part Three and Part Four. March will cover the rest of the book. (Yes, you get 3 months to read the 600+ page book.)

Related Events
Dr. Kate Sleeth, Interim Associate Dean of Administration and Student Development, will be giving two talks  related to the book. The first presentation, “A Historical Overview of Cancer: The Body’s Nemesis?” will be given twice during Learning and Personal Development Week: Monday January 25 at 12 p.m. & Thursday January 28 at 7:45 a.m. Her second talk (not yet titled) will cover the more recent history and City of Hope’s role in it and will be given after all of the discussion groups have occurred.

The final event will be a panel discussion with some of City of Hope’s experts.

 What’s Next

If you have not yet started reading the book there are copies (both print and audio) currently available for checking-out at the library’s front desk.  The ten lucky winners from our Benefits Fair prize raffle will also have their copies soon.

Just too busy to read along with us? We would still like you to participate. Ken Burns produced one of his classic specials on the book.  We have copies of the DVD & Blu-ray available for checking-out.  They also are available for streaming on NetFlix or Amazon Prime for those who are members.

 Join us in January!
