New recreational reading

We just received a small batch of recreational reading: Marcia Clark writes fiction, Betty White writes her memoirs, and zombies get romantic (yes.  really.  zombie romance.)  Also, for you Charlaine Harris/Sookie Stackhouse/True Blood fans, we have the brand new Sookie novel, Dead Reckoning.  It will be on the shelf in a couple of days — as soon as I finish reading it 🙂

Interview with Dr. Edmond Fischer, Nobel laureate

The Western Front, official newspaper of Western Washington University, has published a brief interview with Dr. Edmond Fischer. Fischer and his longtime research partner, Dr. Edwin Krebs, received the 1992 Nobel Prize in medicine for their work on phosphorylation.  In the interview, Dr. Fischer talks about his career and his observations of the scientific community.

Scientific Reports – new open access journal from Nature Publishing

Nature Publishing has announced a new open access publication, Scientific Reports.  The mission of this new publication, according to the web site, is “to process and publish research as quickly as possible.”  According to various parts of the web site, Scientific Reports will:

  • cover all areas of the natural sciences — biology, chemistry, physics and earth sciences
  • offer rapid peer review and publication
  • publish “original articles on the basis that they are technically sound, and papers are peer reviewed on this criterion alone.”

They are currently accepting submissions, with the first papers to be published in June, 2011.  All papers will incur an article processing charge.  The usual charge will be $1700, but they are offering a 20% discount for papers submitted before January 2012 (discounted price is $1350).
