Provocative questions in cancer research

January 25, 2011

The National Cancer Institute recently launched the Provocative Questions web site to “assemble a list of important but non-obvious questions that will stimulate the NCI’s research communities to use laboratory, clinical, and population sciences in especially effective and imaginative ways.”  Once you register, you can “submit an original question, comment upon an existing question, rank a question, or comment upon an existing comment.”  Here are the questions that have been submitted and posted on the site:

  • Why are some disseminated cancers cured by chemotherapy alone?
  • Are there definable properties of non-malignant lesions that predict the likelihood of progression to invasive disease?
  • Why do many cancer cells die when suddenly deprived of a protein encoded by an oncogene?
  • What molecular mechanism(s) are responsible for the well-documented association of obesity with certain types of cancer?
  • How can we harness new technologies to inhibit traditionally “undruggable” target proteins, such as transcription factors, that are required for cancer cell viability?

Free repository of posters from Faculty of 1000

January 11, 2011

Faculty of 1000 Posters screenshotFaculty of 1000 has created the Open Poster Repository for Biology & Medicine, a free repository of posters from conferences in medicine and the life sciences.  According to the site,

Our aim in building F1000 Posters is to give poster presenters and supporting societies the opportunity to make their work known to a wider audience. It will also enable much greater discussion on new research, hopefully opening up opportunities for new collaborations which will help advance scientific research as a whole. Posters deposited here will be reviewed by our world-renowned Faculty who will select posters that they consider to be particularly interesting and important and write evaluations for inclusion in our award-winning F1000 evaluation service.

There is no charge to access the site or to deposit a poster.

Also, access to the Faculty of 1000 database is available to City of Hope staff and students via the Graff Library’s subscription.  Faculty of 1000 highlights and evaluates papers in biology and medicine that their panel of expert reviewers considers interesting and/or important.  It’s an excellent tool for familiarizing yourself with a new topic or keeping up with the latest, most important work in a subject area.  You can use the My F1000 feature to customize the service for your interests and receive email notifications when new papers are added.  If you would like to learn more about Faculty of 1000, please contact the library.

1999-2007 Cancer Incidence and Mortality Data

January 5, 2011

The 1999–2007 United States Cancer Statistics (USCS): Incidence and Mortality Web-based Report was released in late December.  According to the press release,

This year’s report features information on more than one million invasive cancer cases diagnosed during 2007 among residents of 49 states, six metropolitan areas, and the District of Columbia—geographic areas in which about 99% of the U.S. population resides.

California had the 10th-lowest rate of overall cancer incidence (age-adjusted) in 2007, while our neighbor Arizona had the lowest rate.  At the other end of the scale, Delaware had the highest incidence rate.

Here’s some data for the Los Angeles area:

Top 3 cancer sites for men (incidence):

  1. Prostate
  2. Lung and bronchus
  3. Colon and rectum

Top 3 cancer sites for women (incidence):

  1. Breast
  2. Colon and rectum
  3. Lung and bronchus

The report is produced by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the National Cancer Institute (NCI), in collaboration with the North American Association of Central Cancer Registries (NAACCR).
