Books-4-Hope Gold Award Project: Guest Post by Madison Knapp

November 10, 2014

Many thanks to our guest blogger, Madison Knapp, a Girl Scout who is working on her Gold Award and is partnering with Library Services to collect and donate books for our pediatric patients and their siblings.

Edited by Andrea Lynch

My name is Madison, and I have been in Girl Scouts since I was in kindergarten.  I am a sophomore in high school, and am working on my Gold Award.  The Gold Award is the highest award a Girl Scout can earn. I have achieved my Bronze and Silver Awards, and am excited to work on my Gold.

I chose City of Hope as my organization to work with because I’ve always felt a connection to kids with cancer.  No family should have to go through what a family goes through when cancer touches a child. One day while visiting City of Hope, I learned of the beautiful Lee Graff Medical & Scientific Library, but found they didn’t have any books for kids, so there was nothing to take the kids’ minds off their treatments.

My project, Books-4-Hope, is a two-part project. The first part of the project involves the collection of new books to be given to each of the children that are patients at City of Hope as well as their siblings. The second part of my project is to begin a children and adult lending library at the library called “Take-a-Book, Leave-a-Book.”  The patients receiving treatment, and their siblings and other family members, can take a book to read, and they can either return it when they are done, or they can keep it.  If they choose to keep the book, we request that they bring a book back to add to the lending library, thus giving back to others and continuing the cycle.

To date, I’ve collected approximately 300 books from donations, but I need your help.  My goal is to collect 600 books.   Please consider donating new or gently used books to bring a smile to a child’s face, and to help make my Gold Award project a success. A bin will be located in the Graff Library building during the month of November to collect your donations.
