IOM’s recent discussion paper: “Ten Attributes of Health Literate Health Care Organizations”

June 29, 2012

Health Literacy has been gaining prominence as a health care issue since it was mentioned as an objective in Healthy People 2010.   In 2010, the Department of Health and Human Services came out with the “National Action Plan to Improve Health Literacy”.  The second of its seven goals was to “Promote changes in the health care system that improve health information, communication, informed decision making, and access to health services”.  A goal all health care workers have a role in achieving.

Now the  Institute of Medicine’s Roundtable on Health Literacy has published a discussion paper entitled “Ten Attributes of Health Literate Health Care Organizations” listing ways health care organizations can strengthen their patient centered care by prioritizing health literacy concepts.  These attributes are something to keep in mind as we establish our goals and focus on always improving the quality of our patient care.

We would love to hear your ideas on steps we can take to improve our standing as a “Health Literate Organization.”

No more access to NEJM archives

June 29, 2012

We have lost access to issues of the New England Journal of Medicine published before 1990.  Access to older issues used to be included with a current online subscription, but the publisher is now charging extra for access to the older issues (1812-1989).  Because access to these issues is expensive, and usage statistics suggest that older issues are used infrequently, we do not plan to purchase access to the NEJM archives.  If you  need an older article from NEJM, please submit an interlibrary loan request via our ILLiad system, and we will get the article for you as quickly as we can.
