AAMC News and Leadership Announcements, 2012 November 20

November 20, 2012

The current issue of AAMC News and Leadership Announcements includes the following stories that may be of particular interest at City of Hope:

Saturday’s New York Times featured an article on the status of drug shortages in the U.S. According to the article, “Caused largely by an array of manufacturing problems, the shortage has prompted Congressional hearings, a presidential order and pledges by generic drug makers to communicate better with federal regulators. The problem peaked in 2011, when a record 251 drugs were declared in short supply. This year, slightly more than 100 were placed on the list, and workers say the battle to keep pharmacy shelves stocked continues unabated.”

AAMC has published “Diversity in Medical Education: Facts & Figures 2012,” the 17th data book in the Facts & Figures Data Series. This publication provides students, medical educators and administrators, researchers, policymakers, and the general public with a compendium of detailed statistical information on race and ethnicity and gender in medical education in the United States for the 2011 academic year as well as nearly a decade’s worth of trending information for select topics. The publication also includes data related to the pre-college component of the education pipeline leading to the M.D. degree and other health sciences and health professions careers.

The award will not be processed until recipients have demonstrated compliance. This change will take effect in tandem with NIH requiring the use of the Research Performance Progress Report (RPPRs) for all Streamlined Non-competing Award Process (SNAP) and Fellowship awards in the Spring of 2013.” Dr. Sally Rockey, NIH Deputy Director for Extramural Research, has posted a related essay on her blog.
